Maguire is hysterical and dreadful. Schreiber just looks uncomfortable and silly. There are some good chess documentaries around rather than bother with this.
Loved the 60's streets.Would be best told by a documentary (the film's narration is not that effective) but we do have an excellent support cast & a tour de force from Hardy who alone is worth the admission money – his portrayal of Ronnie is top drawer.
Good performance from Greenwood & Purnell is suitably vulnerable as the teenager. Although the location shooting is a ready made winner the no frills low key approach to the story telling is what makes the film effective. A non invasive sound track helps.
The screenplay was unnecessarily juvenile at times. The biggest disappointment however was the waste of the adult cast – they had small parts. You wish Cera & co. could be pushed to one side to give the adults a crack even if it meant re–titling the film.
The opening scene was fine as was the music over the end credits but I don't what the director's intentions were with what happened in between. Hawke was over the top and terrible & if the plot was meant to be black humorous it didn't work.
