Pawn SacrificePawn Sacrifice (2014)
1 star (Turkey) Maguire is hysterical and dreadful. Schreiber just looks uncomfortable and silly. There are some good chess documentaries around rather than bother with this.
LegendLegend (2015)
4 stars (Very Good) Loved the 60's streets.Would be best told by a documentary (the film's narration is not that effective) but we do have an excellent support cast & a tour de force from Hardy who alone is worth the admission money – his portrayal of Ronnie is top drawer.
Wildlike (2015)
3 stars (Good Enough) Good performance from Greenwood & Purnell is suitably vulnerable as the teenager. Although the location shooting is a ready made winner the no frills low key approach to the story telling is what makes the film effective. A non invasive sound track helps.
Youth in RevoltYouth in Revolt (2009)
2 stars (Good Try) The screenplay was unnecessarily juvenile at times. The biggest disappointment however was the waste of the adult cast – they had small parts. You wish Cera & co. could be pushed to one side to give the adults a crack even if it meant re–titling the film.
Indian in the CupboardIndian in the Cupboard (1995)
3 stars (Good Enough) The kid didn't do much for me but the screenplay and the effects are commendable.
Staten IslandStaten Island (Little New York) (2009)
2 stars (Good Try) The opening scene was fine as was the music over the end credits but I don't what the director's intentions were with what happened in between. Hawke was over the top and terrible & if the plot was meant to be black humorous it didn't work.
Brooklyn RulesBrooklyn Rules (2007)
2 stars (Good Try) It's all been done before but by much tougher characters than these candy flosses.
A Perfect GetawayA Perfect Getaway (2009)
2 stars (Good Try) I lost patience with the characters and the story telling was muddled for me but this film has good reviews elsewhere.
Simple Wish, ASimple Wish, A (1997)
3 stars (Good Enough) A bit uneven but overall enjoyable. Martin Short is good but the highlights are when Kathleen Turner and Amanda Plummer are on camera.
Lighthorsemen, TheLighthorsemen, The (1987)
2 stars (Good Try) Overlong but the horse trainers and handlers need to be commended for their skills as do the photography people.
