10/10 for costumes. Script is witty but the screenplay weakens towards the end. Affleck probably cast for commercial reasons & is out of place & depth among a dream supporting cast headed by Rush. The film is at its weakest when the two leads are alone.
Well made and could be used as a recruitment tool. Gets a bit sidetracked with some unnecessary flash backs. Richard Boone and Chas. McGraw have small parts.
The effects are what you would expect from a good special effects director. The SF plot encourages you to read the author but the overlong film loses interest in the SF after an hour & it becomes a boring actioner in which Cruise seems more comfortable.
I didn't get too excited about the screenplay but I did about the casting of Keaton, Goodman (great together and are responsible for the film's best bits), Arkin and Tomei.
The plot idea is fine but I kept running hot and cold on this during the viewing – at the end decided it was too smart for its own good with too many flashbacks – Kutcher's performance didn't help decide matters as he also performed hot and cold.
Great opening shot of a rock climber & scenery until the camera focus's on Cruises nostrils & sets the tone for the rest of the film. As is the norm for this kind of film the only interesting character is the villain and Scott is fine in this regard.
