A very hard to watch film – certainly well acted and maybe better after a second viewing. Second viewing: Its a plot you can listen to as a radio play but the acting of David Oyelowo has some visual elements and is to be admired.
Great action film – very noisy and with plenty of gunfire and dead bodies – excellent special effects – but its all been done before several times over.
A low key drama that drifts along at the right pace. Loved the relationship between the aunt & the two girls which is only bettered by that between the siblings. Ruthie is the biggest and oldest but gets pushed around by her sister – you reach out to her.
Rob doesn't exactly set the world alight with his performance but Ally helps out in the acting department in this story of a clash of cultures – "A Yank at Oxford" (1938 ). A capable British supporting cast helps as does the river scenery.
The fire fights are that authentic the film generates real suspense and you don't know whether your heroes will survive (quite an unusual situation really). Nolte and Cassidy head a fine cast.
An okay watch but there are not really enough fresh ideas to make it interesting. There is the usual amount of violence and body count for this size of western with the landscape highlighting proceedings.
Branagh's accent puts you on the defensive straight away – we all know he's a British Shakespearean actor & not an American lawyer. The screenplay is a bit contrived but the main problem is the paper thin characters including Duvall's.
