You will probably know after five minutes whether the style and formatting of the film and/or Martin's performance appeals. Beautifully shot in black and white.
It is another basketball film with a pontificating coach but not all basketball films have Samuel L Jackson. However all his good work is undone by the film being at least a half hour too long.
The screenplay doesn't quite work but it gets close and there is compensation to be found in the lack of all round glamour. Vanessa doesn't have a great deal to do but Roth and Schell are fine. The music score is suitably depressing.
Costner had trouble speaking properly – he might have had a cold. The screenplay was familiar and this could be a remake. The violence, including funny one liners before dispatching someone, just gets tiresome.
Allen's enunciation is not good at times. Again when Director he takes on a romantic role – I assume the ladies are allowed a stand–in. One star for the location shooting and one for as always the great Diane Keaton.
Have mixed feelings about this – its biggest handicap was the familiarity of the plot – but the ladies do a good job and so do the special effects team & it is enjoyable for the most part.
