A story line that has been filmed several times. The acting of Andrew McCarthy and Jami Gertz deteriorates as the drama increases. Spader and Downey are fine.
The set designs & wardrobe for wartime London looked well researched. The strength of the film is the dynamics of the 3 characters but this does weaken with the introduction of number four to the group which I assume was necessary to adhere to the facts.
Not as good as other screwball comedies from this period – the never ending chatter is thrown at you without a break but there are some good bits and overall well worth the time.
There is plenty of opportunity to admire Stallone in profile in a vest. If you are not so inclined the prison scenes are done pretty well and have a hard edge to them.
The best parts are the opening scenes that set the stage in the small community – beautifully photographed and the settings look spot on. The mayhem that follows is low key and believable.
