The screenplay is not too bad but the casting is the real attraction both in the leads and supports (Alun Armstrong, Michael J Pollard, Pete Postlethwaite).
The screenplay loses a bit of impetus in its later stages but for the most part, it is a good mix of drama and satire. The battle scenes are small scale, personal and believable.
The screenplay is processed through closeups of Joan's facial expressions and through good use of lighting and camera angles on her tormentors and during the crowd scenes.
The grumpy males take it out on the kids who in turn, having little else to do, plot. There is enough in this slow drama to keep the interest as the locations fill in when the action is static & there is a music score that makes somnolence impossible.
