The decision to open the film, and then leave the Hebrides, created a challenge for the filmmakers which they never were able to overcome although Brian Cox's performance alleviated things somewhat.
Screenplay was one where if you missed half an hour it wouldn't have mattered as you could still follow the story. Taylor & Hudson were fine but none of the characters were interesting. Dean provided some unintentional lightness struggling in his role.
Although the screenplay is overly drawn out it is worth watching for the performance of Peter Ustinov. The best scenes involve him or the acting royalty of Laughton and Olivier.
The screenplay was contrived but it had 2 good scenes. One was the jury room but the best was when Sir John entertained the Markhams. It emphasised their social distance simply through the niceties of partaking of a glass of wine & later a bowl of soup.
The screenplay, too often melodramatic (it has assistance from the music score and a limited language script), soon gets tiresome and is about an hour too long.
