The long screenplay at no stage lacks interest. The casting is faultless and the performances are a strength of the dramatisation. Michael Gambon 10/10 – even surrounded by a wealth of talent he is a standout.
The excellent Brian Blessed heads the troupe in this well designed interpretation. Is there any character type the ubiquitous Alfred Molina cannot play(?)
Bening gives a terrific performance in stamina if nothing else. Although the screenplay doesn't see out the distance it has some great moments when Bening is working with the superb veteran members of the cast. The set designs & wardrobe are spot on.
For the most part, it has a Guy Ritchie pace but the screenplay is uneven & I would suggest it is because there are too many characters. Michelle Dockery and Colin Farrell are good but Charlie Hunnam is unconvincing in giving a Tom Hardy impression.
For an animated film, it is heavy on dialogue. This to me, defeats the purpose of animation which is primarily a visual art. If the dialogue doesn't switch you off the animation is worth a look.
Aka "Cleo from 5 to Bedtime". Aparicio as Cleo is terrific as a Jill of all trades to a well–off family – importantly she is the one with most control & influence over the children – which I would think is the main point the Director is trying to make.
