Heart of the Game, The

Aroview: Often-rousing documentary about a Seattle girls’ high school basketball team and their unconventional coach.

Darnelia, a socially deprived but gifted basketballer, provides the dramatic impetus as her grades falter and she falls pregnant. Quirky tax-professor-turned-coach Bill Resler heavily lays on the motivational metaphors but with a method to his madness that highlights the importance of team-spirit overcoming any social stigma. While a little stilted and straightforward in the telling, the engrossing saga that unfolds more than compensates.
