- Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
- I have seen a lot of musicals, and few are as lively and fun as Little Shop of Horrors.
- Re-Animator (1985)
- A classic gory horror–comedy filled with grotesque special effects and witty black humour
- 20,000 Days on Earth (2014)
- Impressively moody cinematography, production, editing and sound design. Brilliant film.
- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray
$34.95 $17.50
- Bad Taste (1987)
- I want Peter Jackson in his ultra low–budget horror mode again. Forget Lord of the Rings, this B–grade splatter film is the best one to watch.
- Braindead (Dead Alive) (1992)
- Blood–splattered horror masterpiece is a gory good time.
- World's End, The (2013)
- Was a bit disappointed as I enjoyed the two other films in this trilogy a hell of a lot more than this.
- Shaun of the Dead (2004)
- It's fair to say that 'Shaun of the Dead' is a classic. Since its release it's been imitated plenty of times and none of them have really done as well.
- Lair of the White Worm (1988)
- A totally strange, gore–drenched horror/comedy about ancient pagan rituals.
- Pink Floyd - The Wall (1982)
- A stunning portrayal of a slide from isolation into madness. The music is great, and it is amazing to see the rock opera told visually.
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
- A childhood favourite and a Classic Musical with an adventurous journey. From the wacky inventions to the dreamlike journey, it's a film filled with familiar songs to all with some memorable dance scenes.
- Sinister (2012)
- As much as I don't like Ethan Hawke, Sinister was a genuinely scary horror film which is surprisingly hard to come by these days. Horror fans will love the way it delivers on the genre with some inventive artistic flourish.
- Woman in Black, The (2012)
- Not the best ghost story ever made, but it is one of the purest and most effective to hit cinemas in quite a long time. That in itself makes this a film worth cherishing, goose bumps and all.
- Black Sheep (2006)
- Enjoyable, frequently hilarious horror comedy. Although it's stronger on laughs and gloopy gore effects than it is on actual scares, Black Sheep is witty enough to please horror fans in search of an entertaining splatter flick.
- Under the Skin (2013)
- This is an intelligent and classy film that shows just how good an actress Johansson can be when given the chance.
- Moulin Rouge (2001)
- You'll be singing your heart out to elephant love medley before you know it. A truly great musical and a glorious film for all Luhrmann lovers.
- Hour, The - Series 1 (TV Series) (2011)
- A remarkable television series, surprisingly not very well known. Well worth the watch.
- Bridge, The - Series 1 (TV Series) (Bron/Broen) (2011)
- Brilliant television series, got me hooked just by listening to the first opening sequence. I love the very subtle humorous take on Saga Norén's character. Sofia Helin makes it all the more enjoyable.
- DVD $99.95
- Smithereens (1982)
- This movie seems directionless at first, but it does an exceptional job at drawing you into the characters' lives and making you care about them.
- What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
- I fear the american audience won't get the kiwi humour present in this frightfully funny horror–comedy. Being a Wellingtonian made it all the more enjoyable to watch.
- DVD $14.95 | Blu-Ray $19.95
- Babadook, The (2014)
- It's incredibly chilling, but the horror doesn't take away from the raw emotion of a mother struggling against herself.
- Nightmare Before Christmas, The (1993)
- Burton and his collaborators present a musical that's like nothing you've ever seen. A must–see for the whole family.
- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
- William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (Romeo + Juliet) (1997)
- Every second of this movie is absolutely fantastic. Truly the best adaptation of Shakespeare's famous tragedy. The casting, soundtrack, modern shakespearean script and brilliant art direction is utterly to die for.
- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
- Silence of the Lambs, The (1991)
- This breathtaking psychological thriller and terrific character study will always be remembered for its iconic depiction of one of the most fascinating monsters ever created, Hannibal Lecter.
- Rolling Stones - Stones in Exile (2010)
- This is a patchwork of stills, video, and voice overs looking at the iconic album Exile on Main Street.
- Lunchbox, The (2013)
- The lunchbox is a perfect example of a unique 'short story'.
- DVD $19.95
- Frank (2014)
- Lets be real here, the story is about a band whose front man wears a big papier–mâché head. The movie has to be good.
- Housebound (2014)
- One of the funniest movies i’ve seen in a long time. Very kiwi, very witty, and spooky at times. Housebound is definitely one of the must see movies of the year.
- Wind Rises, The (2013)
- If The Wind Rises is Miyazaki's final feature, it marks a suitably rich and strange exit for one of the giants of Japanese cinema.
- DVD $34.95 | Blu-Ray $39.95
- Spirited Away (2002)
- It's like strolling into Alice's Wonderland and seeing every wonder sprout up around you for the first time. It is a film of such brilliant originality, intelligence, and emotion that I feel inexplicable joy when the opening title card fades in.
- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $39.95
- Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
- Kiki is one of Miyazaki's greatest characters and the animation brings her and the strange city she lives in to vivid life.
- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $39.95
- My Neighbour Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) (1988)
- The most family friendly of any Ghibli film, this masterwork gently takes you through the faint aches of youth with utter trust in the wonder of a nature–inspired imagination. The film is so adorable you will want to buy all it's merchandise.
- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $39.95
- Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
- Absolutely astonishing animation, entertaining scrpit and fantastic plot. Best film of Hayao Miyazaki's.
- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $39.95
- Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)
- Madonna has never found a better fit than the role of Susan.
- Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
- Exceptional film and a classic cult musical that everybody must watch.
- Hot Fuzz (2007)
- Hot Fuzz supplies plenty of hysteria along with its fantastic direction and plot. Possibly one of the funniest films i've ever seen as it's the marginally the best in the trilogy followed by Shaun of the Dead.
- Scream (1996)
- Scream takes every horror cliche, makes fun of it and makes them fantastic! It has a brilliant cast and a climax that will not be long forgotten along with all the thrills and chills and laughs that you could want in a horror movie.
- Psycho (1960)
- After half a century of terror, Psycho is still ensuring that no one feels safe in the shower.
- DVD
$19.95 $14.95
- Free Samples (2012)
- A pleasant small–budget movie with laziness in the script, but one particularly sweet performance that makes up for it.
- Dogfight (1991)
- A virtually unknown gem to my generation. Is definitely one of the sweetest, most touching romances of it's decade. Phoenix was undeniably the most attractive man in Hollywood.
- DVD
$20 $15
- Stand by Me (1986)
- An absorbing, touching examination of the loss of innocence. Despite occasionally drifting towards the sappy, Stand by Me undeniably deserves its place in the heart of a generation.
- Running On Empty (1988)
- Easily one of the most poignant and edifying films of the 80's about the blessings and burdens of family life. River Phoenix gives an Oscar nominated performance making Running on Empty in my top ten favourite films of all time.
- Filth and the Fury, The (2000)
- The documentary takes an intelligent perspective on the punk scene in retrospect and is fairly objective and revealing. Of interest to any Sex Pistols fans.
- Joy Division (2007)
- One of the best and honest accounts of one of the most influential bands you're ever likely to see. Glad to see a documentary about Joy Division that focuses on the band themselves.
- Aaah Zombies! (Wasting Away) (2007)
- Despite the tiny budget, creators Matthew and Sean Kohnen have taken the zombie genre to a whole new level. It's definitely a good laugh and an entertaining film for all zombie lovers.
- DVD $34.95
- Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
- Forget garlic, crucifixes and wooden stakes. Jarmusch dispenses with the usual vampire paraphernalia to deliver a beguiling meditation on love and immortality. Favourite film of the year.
- God Help the Girl (2014)
- Actress Emily Browning captures Eve's weariness and enthusiasm effectively. Additionally, her lovely voice and crisp delivery gives Murdoch's laboured lyrics a vulnerable immediacy.
- Control (2007)
- Being a Joy Division fanatic myself, Control is easily one of the finest films ever made about the collision of music, madness, and the human heart.
- Greetings From Tim Buckley (2012)
- A sentimental mirror portrait of father and son, two of the most beloved singers of their generations. Full of songs from both Buckleys, the film stays away from a typical biographical structure, ending the film before Jeff Buckley even got famous.
