Beautiful

Australia 2009, 97 minutes
Dir. Dean O'Flaherty
Genres: Suspense/Crime

Aroview: Australian suburban thriller sees a 17-year old Lolita persuade her smitten young neighbour to take photographs of the seedy goings-on in their neighbourhood, with dangerous results.

Dir. O'Flaherty's debut is beautiful to look at, his lingering camera presents us with a surreal, BLUE VELVET-inspired suburbia that ripples with sinister goings-on. It is unfortunate, then, that the narrative cannot quite deliver the thrills this kind of lushness demands, and although the cast give it their all, the pace is simply too slow to keep us on the edge of our seats. As an exercise in style however, it remains impressive.
