Brief Encounter (1946)
perfect movie of the 40s. It's a shame some of the conventions of the time – accents in particular – make it seem mannered.
Dambusters, The (Dam Busters, The) (1954)
The World War II film you think is cliched until you realise it created the cliches: Clever man designs bomb, pilots train, most die in gripping finale. It's surprisingly un–jingoistic. Richard Todd had really written those letters at the end. It shows.
