If the screenplay requires a lot of nose to nose contact you would think it only fair that the leading lady should have a say in the casting of her dueling partner.
For non–romantics, the screenplay may not be that interesting but it is worthwhile because of the quality of the casting. The scenes between Bette and her mum were the best for me.
Although a melodramatic Jay Robinson puts some life into proceedings (as well as taking lives out) screenplays of this ilk really do need Peter Ustinov.
An average screenplay but one which at least has a fresh angle. Glenn's character represents the male pig but there is some compensation to be found on the female side in Debra Winger early in her career. A terrific soundtrack anchors the proceedings.
The screenplay is solidly written and doesn't get sidetracked (other than to go off into side streets and alleys for nefarious purposes). Donald P's performance is memorable.
