Couldn't work out what it was trying to be and after watching the Making Of believe they were trying for the hardest comedy field of all – the black comedy. Schwimmer and Eve were fine but Pegg only ordinary.
Some Dennis Potter type musical numbers but although the singing is a bit ropey at times – entertaining. A good way to relate a Shakespearean tale – excellent casting.
What's intended is reasonably obvious but no characters come across as being real and the posturing gets a bit silly and tiresome. One good scene is where both sides cock up their intended retribution on the other side. Watch "Kids" for more realism.
Its starts off well and Lake Bell is very good but its not as good when Pegg and Kinnear arrive on the scene – both males are good comedic actors but the film would have been better I suspect if Lake could have just interacted with the female characters.
In addition to the excellent special effects/animal antics there is the casting of Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie who take a backseat but make a significant contribution.
A plot that's episodically/thematically told. I suspect most of us will find something to appreciate within the film because of its different themes but maybe not everything will be to everyone's taste. I enjoyed the performance of Nobuko Miyamoto.
A good if abbreviated performance from Morgan Freeman (as per usual) and Aksel Hennie who looked very comfortable in what he was doing. Impressed also by the wardrobe but the plot if okay didn't really break the mould from an era when life was cheap.
