It doesn't look as expensively made as many other comic adaptations but its one of the more enjoyable ones.It also doesn't appear to take itself seriously which helps.
The period props and wardrobe are spot on. An understated performance from Ronan works well. The best scenes are those with Julie Walters in the boarding house.
It's not just the spookiness that works – the shooting locations in run down industrial areas are utterly depressing & add to the mood of the film. The locations are not the only thing that are run down – so is the lead character well played by Yakusho.
Because of the way the camera is set up it locks itself into a one joke scenario for an hour and a half. Its not a waste of time however – as well as the senseless violence there is some originality.
The first half is better than the second – although Mia does well throughout. Because of the later "Fault in our Stars" this story line has now been thrashed and it doesn't stand up to a second viewing.
A really well balanced documentary comprising music and interviews. The interviewees whilst pro Reed are not the arse licking type. Plenty of performance archival footage.
Has a good director and the talents of Michael Fassbender as its lead but for some reason, except for the odd segment here and there, it just doesn't work. I wish it did for the Director's sake.
