The segments involving Jennifer and Josh are routine but it works better when Redford (he's not bad in this one) & Freeman are fighting it out. But what really holds it together is the performance of young Griff Gilkyson who more than holds her own.
De Niro's character is way over the top and ruins the film – he might have been out to enjoy himself or was going for an oscar but its surprising the master director didn't reign him in.
Whilst the screenplay is nothing to write home about the script makes you cringe at times. Debra Winger rises above the ashes and gives the best performance.
Whilst the screenplay doesn't have all that much to offer in originality and it treads water at times there is some beautiful location scenery. The acting talent available exceeds the requirements.
The story telling is unnecessarily convoluted but the highlight is the sparring matches Kathy has with the rest of the talented cast – she has a different look for each of them & its a master class. Ellen Muth does well as the vulnerable younger Jennifer.
There has to be interest in a cast which includes Van Cleef and Oates with John Davis Chandler lurking around as well. Its a bit overlong for what the screenplay has to offer but the photography is easy on the eye.
Everyone is a bitch. Sin–Dee (Cinderella) does her impression of Run Lola Run dragging another hoe behind her/him through streets that the film maker seems to have no control over. Its a scene typical of this hoot of a bitter sweet comedy.
