Didn't seem to have much originality to the screenplay – its familiar ground. I don't know why you need the talents of Mirren and Rickman (and others) for this kind of stuff.
He's a fine actor but I don't think Mitchum is a romantic although he does slug Shirley across the chops. Shirley is terrific in everything she does (including slugging Mitchum back) and so are the wonderful shots of the streets.
With such a rousing musical accompaniment the dam busters had to succeed & it could be forgiven for being used as a final farewell as Richard Todd walks into the sunset. An intelligent low key film that gives equal coverage to what preceded the raid.
Delightful and off beat with an excellent use of colours and musical segments.Loved the set design for Madame Proust's apartment and the originality of the lead character. The odd ball symmetrical aunts are great in support.
