The screenplay is uneven – some restraint in the machine gun fire would have helped – but Gina rises above it – there is a pretty strong supporting cast.
What is good is very good with the highlights being courtroom scene plus the different uses of the black & white photography. Rita looking poo–eyed into Welles's eyes looks ridiculous but there are good performances from Everett Sloane & Glenn Anders.
The comedic theme helps sustain its running time. I will remember most the physical demands placed on the peasant couple; the action shots of the horses & horsemanship & the wonderful panoramic views (which are used sparingly).
