Although the band members have a very limited knowledge of the English language the documentary overcomes this by using some archival film including concert footage.
It has dated a bit 17 years on and not as good as the original viewing – mainly because the format of the screenplay is now familiar and the situations become predictable.
The challenge is to swallow the screenplay & then to hang in for over two hours. What doesn't help is Carrey floundering in the lead even with some experienced actors in support. On the plus side the production values are good & there is some fine music.
I assume the director is trying to bring attention to teenage suicides – NZ had the highest rate in the developed world in 2016. I am unfamiliar with the novel but well done if she is. Kirsten Dunst is head & shoulders above the rest of the young cast.
