The set designs and wardrobe are good but the screenplay doesn't amount to much. I'm not sure why someone of the quality of Marion Cotillard is required for a walk in the park like this.
Some good segments particularly early in the film when the two female groups clash but overall its uneven and too long. The Rape of Nanking is too important an event to be dramatised.
The best scenes involve nutter Thewlis although there is some good comedy acting from Postlethwaite and Connery. There is just too much unnecessary violence which is a shame because there are some very good segments.
The squad is in enemy territory but they are yelling at each other and having committee meetings – it is just not believable as a war drama. The war crime is handled better and is rightfully distasteful.
