Fantastic Planet (1973)
The story is simple enough but its underlying darkness makes it interesting. The skillful hand animation style is a refreshing change from what is mainly on offer 45 years on.
JFK (1991)
There are plenty of documentaries available – this is a waste of film stock & only adds to the confusion about what happened. If we are to be condemned to a 3 hour dramatisation then the lead actor should at least be alive & not a drone.
Animal Factory (2000)
The screenplay is believable and is aided by little fuss performances all round. There is a terrific bluesy soundtrack.
War on Everyone (2016)
There are hints of better things to come at times but it doesn't work overall. It needed Brendan Gleeson – preferably in both parts.
Be Cool (2005)
It has some good moments particularly around Uma Thurman and Harvey Keitel.
Brazil (1985)
I can't recall any quiet moments – the action seems continuous. The casting contains quality & helps get across the comedy part of the screenplay. The highlight for me however is the futuristic set designs & the imaginative use of lighting by the camera.
Nuts (1987)
Streisand as Producer and lead actor – beware. Her performance ruins this – mainly through her yelling and screeching. It is a shame because of the quality of the rest of the cast.
Farce of the Penguins (2006)
Some mildly amusing segments.
Their Finest (2017)
I tend just to admire the period set designs and wardrobe in these productions – it is not say the screenplay or performances are not worth a look.
Nicholas and Alexandra (1971)
Impressive set designs and trappings. Although long it is never boring because it basically respects the historical truth of a fascinating period. Michael Jayston does very well – the supporting cast oozes British acting talent.
