Zed and Two Noughts, A (1985)
It is hard to follow at times but it is a Greenaway film and never boring and it will stand up to repeated viewings.
Married to the Mob (1988)
Michelle and Dean are standouts but sprinkled among the minor characters there is Mercedes Ruehl scene–stealing plus quality in Al Lewis and Joan Cusack et al. The set designs are well done.
Beyond the Hills (2012)
Although the screenplay is too long it takes a gentle swipe at religion so it is worth the time plus there is a fine performance from Cosmina Stratan.
Sunshine Cleaning (2008)
Although the screenplay doesn't quite last the distance it has a freshness to it. The performances are very appealing and the casting of Arkin spot on.
Loving Vincent (2017)
It is an interesting screenplay but the animation is the standout.
Althea (2015)
It is a story that should move most viewers. What a remarkable athlete and what a voyage. Some excellent interviewees especially Angela Buxton who came to Althea's rescue when she was in the pits of despair.
Ulee's Gold (1997)
The pacing of the film is just right to equate to the pace of life in these parts. A believable low key screenplay is complemented by some believable low key characters. The photography is beautiful.
Athens, GA - Inside Out (1986)
The interviews are useful but the music is a standout.
Unknown Pleasures / Xiao Wu (1997-2002)
"Unknown Pleasures" Slowly paced but the periods of silence are used well. Screenplay contains some subtle social commentaries. "Xiao Wu" Performed by non–professionals – although probably a bit too long has a low key ending that is perfect.
A Good Woman (2004)
Oscar Wilde did not come through as well as he should have done but the trappings are well done and Tom Wilkinson shines even if Oscar doesn't.
