The animated sequences were a good idea and helped explain some of the verbals. The courtroom scenes were the other highlight with Bob Balaban, David Strathairn and Jon Hamm working well off each other.
It sits alongside the Director's "The Arbor" (2010) very well and also rates highly for warts and all realism. Whilst the two young 'uns take centre stage you have to spare a thought for the teachers but above all feel for the two mothers.
Shoots itself in the foot by being too long. The screenplay is uneven but is helped out by the two classy leads but it really works best when the supports Postlethwaite and Fricker are on camera.
