Animal, The (2001)
The humour is never better than childish and one or two skits are watchable but inevitably it descends into grubbiness.
Shot Caller (2017)
The violence – in particular the stabbings that are normally associated with a prison drama – is done very well and along with other aspects of prison life seeks to achieve realism. Two hours, however, is a bit overlong for the material.
Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
There is an attractive casting plus the admirable work by the wardrobe, make–up and hairdo departments do justice to the time and place.
Welcome to Woop Woop (1997)
Mostly funny – although it gets silly at times it is always entertaining.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
They have been able to re–use a lot of the wardrobe, armour, and make–up from the earlier films. As usual, the effects are very good – the special effects team should be able to do them in their sleep by now.
Female Brain, The (2017)
As a subject, it doesn't always work.
Young Guns 2 (1990)
Another western that is one too many. It is a very crowded genre and a film needs to contain some originality in the screenplay or characters to be distinguishable.
Detroit (2017)
The film opens okay but then becomes boring during the stretched out motel scenes. The documentary format rather than the dramatisation is the best for getting closer to the truth.
Time of the Wolf (Temps du loup, Le) (2003)
Depressing. The screenplay is extremely well done without any frills and as with its characters, it is entirely believable. Even if you don't like it there is a good chance it will leave an impression.
Pinocchio (TV Mini-series) (2008)
Bob Hoskins and Margherita Buy do their best to put some life into the stodgy screenplay. The kid has a screechy voice which doesn't help which I suppose should read creaky if he is made out of wood.
