There is a great supporting cast but Caine for once puts in a patchy performance in being over dramatic at times. The screenplay is also melodramatic in part but the real turn off is the screeching kid who should have been drowned early in the piece.
A great menu of songs complimented by some behind the scenes dramas in which Mr. Cohen largely keeps his cool. His rapport with his fans in this doco. is excellent.
The basic plot is good & although the screenplay doesn't do it justice there are some unnerving moments which are well portrayed on Bryant's face. There is a good musical score & set designs with the cobweb & dust people doing an excellent job.
The attractions of Kulig & Scott Thomas to Hawke are not believable. Even if the affairs were only being imagined (?) they are crucial to the screenplay & should be credible. However, what does work are the sets in the seedy hotel & its inhabitants.
