The pacing of the story is that appropriate to a left–behind small town but it never drags thanks to some seamless editing and compact storytelling. An excellent anti–climatic ending avoids the usual pitfalls.
Berenger is trying to look & move like Paul Newman in this – maybe as a disguise for his acting limitations. Women walking alone at night whilst there is an attacker on the loose is not very credible. Highlight is some good street location photography.
The screenplay and the winter locations are fresh. The gentle pacing of events also means that there is more effectiveness in the periodic shots of drama and humour.
The instant romantic attachments were just not convincing. The fact that they involved sisters made the plot contrivance laughable and insulting to the viewer's intelligence. Lazy screenwriting. Catherine Deneuve had little to do but she did it well.
