The series is consistently good and entertaining helped in no small way by the quality in the support casting of the likes of Pryce and Rush. This voyage is a bit too long, however.
A love story but one enhanced by the shooting on the 1930s working canals. There are also excellent street scenes where those Parisians down on their luck congregate. Note the telephone technology. These historical scenes are valuable & will remain so.
Series 1: The scriptwriting maintains a consistent level throughout the episodes. Importantly the episodes are not too long. David Kelly, in particular, gives great support and takes a lot of pressure off the lead performers.
The pacing of the action and the shooting locations complement each other and although the length of the film is a bit too long for the former it can never be too long for the latter (that's poetic).
For the most part, the screenplay took a low key measured approach, which is unusual for this kind of drama, in that it often suffers through an excess display of emotions.
