It is silly but entertaining with a bouncy soundtrack. There is acting talent to burn in the male cast, led by a wonderful Rupert Everett, but they are employed to enjoy themselves rather than act and leave the centre stage to the girls.
The script is not particularly strong but the screenplay is well–intentioned. I know it takes a long time to pack a scrum but the film is too long for its own good.
The first half–hour was a good attempt at authentic battle action but even by 1998, when this drama was made, war films had been thrashed to death and we didn't need two and a half hours of it. Shorter would have been much better.
Donald Crisp is truly menacing and his scenes with Lillian Gish whose character he throws around the room with relish are impressive. The design work that has gone into the docklands is also worthy of mention.
The screenplay and the exaggerated characters are amusing and are helped by the performances of the above average cast. The wardrobe and set designs are spot on.
