The best scenes are the early outside location shots prior to the inside location shootings. This well–made massacre drama should fill the gap between your evening and nightly TV news bulletins.
If the question of taste is an issue then only parts of it are funny. I didn't think all of it was funny but overall found it good–natured and inoffensive.
Whilst its good to record plays this one is too long. Listening to a character – one that you can't sympathise with – for 2 hours is beyond the call of duty. If he can't be got rid of in the 1st act then at least drug him & give the audience some peace.
A terrific cast do justice to the excellent screenplay which in the main doesn't get sidetracked or get too melodramatic. The screenplay does well to represent both sides of the argument and the debates in the House are its strength.
Corbett, Barker, and Sykes, needless to say, are very good and there are plenty of comedic supporting actors also on show with Hugh Griffith good enough to hold centre stage at times. The canal keeps watch over proceedings.
