Probably the experience of the leads avoids it getting too cringeworthy. If anything it is worth watching out of respect for Henry Fonda's distinguished career.
It has a similar theme to that used for the death of the video store – excellent interviews of the little players (those who know their product) and a historical perspective of the industry that brought about the situation we are in today.
If Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman were the love pairing in all romantic films I would become a fan of the genre. Her emotions are genuine and understandable playing against an exasperating Rickman. Great writing from Director Minghella.
Fabrice Luchini has a way of moving that I haven't seen on screen before & with his character's sister played by Juliette Binoche forms a bizarre twosome. In fact, the only characters in this excellent black comedy that are normal end up on the menu.
