War, Inc. (War Inc.) (2008)
Although the screenplay has its share of silliness the basic plot idea is a very good one and the casting is more than useful.
Bay, The (2012)
The basis of a found footage film is that the viewer is an idiot & s/he believes that the said footage has in fact been found. There are hundreds of these things in circulation (IMDb has a top 100 list) but the viewer has wisened up to the con. long ago.
Vantage Point (2008)
The 1st time I saw this I thought it was pretty boring watching the same explosion 27 times. After a second watch though, I realised it is classic escapism that could become a cult favourite for midnight viewing particularly if our drug laws are relaxed.
Ghost Dog (1999)
It is about professional killing but with a satirical edge. A barely articulate Whitaker is a strange casting choice but for the most part, the rest of the characters (the official bad guys) are well cast and there is a cameo from Gary Farmer thrown in.
Antwone Fisher (2002)
It is a slow moving two hours. There is plenty of dialogue, probably more suited to a stage play, but the performances all round are fine.
Young Victoria, The (2009)
Emily Blunt is a good casting choice but it is Jim Broadbent who takes the acting honours albeit for a too short screen appearance. The production values all round are excellent and to its credit, the screen time is not overlong for this kind of thing.
Juliet of the Spirits (1965)
The colour choices are exquisite. The set designs and wardrobe are excellent. Whilst the fantasy storyline is probably too long a musical score typical of a Fellini film helps things along and two hours in the company of Giulietta Masina is no hardship.
Venus (2006)
O'Toole's unsavoury character is the bitter part of this bitter/sweet drama the highlight being the performance of Jodie Whittaker which compares well with those of the proven thespian veterans.
Bug's Life, A (1998)
It is a Pixar which is a good enough recommendation for most of us = quality animation and interesting characters.
Ladies in Lavender (2005)
Although the screenplay falls away it is good to spend time with Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Miriam Margolyes.
