It looks the part, it has an excellent cast, a good plot idea, and a good finish but overall it doesn't work. David Thewlis's performance however does stand out and is some compensation.
The screenplay is less structured during its second half & although it does not have the strength of the early scenes the effect overall is still of hard punching Glasgow realism coupled with delightful working class wit.
Although romantically themed it avoids most of the soppiness these kinds of screenplays often attract. The mainly female cast are excellent and they are at their best when bonding together.
Stagey & melodramatic but a lesson against all–male juries. It got the sweat, the smoking, & the sticking windows right. Some excellent up–close camera work & performances except Fonda as a producer shouldn't have been in the hero role & in a white suit.
