Wicker Man, The (1973)
The writing is intelligent with a slow build up but heating up at the finish. The Scottish shooting locations take your breath away as does the final scene which they would have had to get right the first time as there is only one Edward Woodward.
Puzzle (Rompecabezas) (2009)
It is about jigsaw puzzles – it should have been as exciting as watching paint dry but it isn't thanks in the main to an excellent lead performance.
Ghost, The (Ryeong) (2004)
It has the usual photogenic casting and noisy noise effects. It is okay but there are few surprises.
Cimarron Kid, The (1952)
Budd Boetticher is one of the better western directors but this is far from his best.
Army of Shadows (L'Armée des Ombres, aka Army in the Shadows) (1969)
Even though the screenplay is not always convincing you feel you are always part of the world of men in the greatcoats and hats.
Ong-Bak (Muay Thai Warrior) (2003)
A festival of violence.
St Trinian's (2007)
It complements the original classic well – the casting is spot on with Everett & Firth, who are vanity free, excellent. You get the impression from the "making of" that everyone enjoyed making it with the female cast having a ball. Watch the music video
Visitor, The (2007)
The first half of the screenplay sets up the relationship between the characters whilst the second packs a political punch. At all times the characters are believable, the pacing is just right and the dramatics are justified.
Testament of Youth (2015)
It is all a bit too romantically commercial at the expense of the more serious things that were happening at the time but that is not to say it is not worth a look as the production values are excellent.
Military Wives (2020)
The two leads make it watchable but the amateur choir thing has been done a few times before.
