Aroview: A natural antidote to Hollywood silicone, this tells the charming coming-of-age story of an ‘ordinary’ Mexican-American high-school graduate, whose personal ambitions are hemmed-in by family commitments and an obligation to support her sister’s ‘sweatshop’ business.
As well as the cultural-generational issues, this touches on exploitation in commerce and ‘body image’ politics for women, wearing its empowerment on its sleeve and carrying an unequivocal message to be happy with oneself - embodied in the magnetic, unaffected performance of America Ferrera.
Winner of the Audience Award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.
