Aro Recommended Never On Sunday

USA / Greece 1960, 89 minutes
Dir. Jules Dassin
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Classics, Comedy / Controversy

Topics: Mid-life, Philosophy.

Aroview: Director Jules Dassin (think a bug-eyed Tony Randall) plays a disillusioned American philosopher searching for answers in the birthplace of philosophy - Athens, Greece.

Meaning finds itself embodied in the hour-glass figure of Melina Mercouri (his real-life wife), a 'happy hooker' whom he doggedly tries to tame, or at least pigeonhole. This comedy was once sensational, though its frank depiction of amorality lies central to its subject. It remains to this day both charming and intelligent.
