4 stars (Very Good) Interesting, complex and unusual. Based on an ambitious prequel to Jane Eyre, a young creole woman in 1840s Jamaica marries a newly-arrived Englishman to avoid losing her property. Love arises, but she is hiding a secret, and her mother's tragedy recurs. ~Sandy
