Dir. Quentin Tarantino

Topics: Gung-ho.
Feat. Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Eli Roth, Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger, Michael Fassbender, Daniel Bruhl
Aroview: A cocky, revisionist war epic channeling spaghetti westerns and the Dirty Dozen, Quentin Tarantino’s long-time pet project is perhaps his most restrained yet, charting a renegade Jewish-American resistance hellbent on murdering and disfiguring Nazi war criminals.
Alternating between Brad Pitt’s Nazi-hunting green berets and a Jewish cinema owner (Laurent) plotting to blow up her theatre with Hitler inside, the film’s concept is nothing if not mischievous fun, further inflated by at least one flamboyant, eye-catching performance. Although exceptionally talky and overlong, Tarantino’s self-indulgences are also for once kept on the down-low, with cinema references tied distinctively to German propaganda film and Weimar-era expressionism – all set amongst lavishly art directed surroundings.

3 stars (Good Enough) Tarantino gets some great performances, notably from Christoph Waltz and rising star Michael Fassbender but we don't see nearly enough of them and the overblown climax removes the viewer from the subtlety of their work, into a pointless bloodbath. ~The Myrka

4 stars (Very Good) Inglorious Basterds begins as serious WWII affair starring the incredible Mr Waltz, before becoming more and more Tarantino in dialogue, quirk, and violence. A great ride as always, but don't be fooled into thinking this is a mature Tarantino at work. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) The movie's cast deliver impressive performances, many from relative unknowns. Just remember it is Tarantino though, violence is part of his gig. And he does it well here, though not as well as in earlier works. ~Weekend Warrior

5 stars (Exceptional) Basterds is relatively free of the Tarantino clichè of over-indulgent film-geekiness and what little there is is disguised as period detail, making this by far the most enjoyable of his films to date. Waltz is also sublime. ~Wizzums
2 stars (Good Try) A terrific prologue (and seemingly surefire conceit) leads nowhere - and slowly, at that. Waltz and Laurent are fun but the rest of the characters fall flat. Ambitious but smug and self-important. ~fairbrother
4 stars (Very Good) ~atsophie
3 stars (Good Enough) Starts off as a serious Tarantino film with the violence even somewhat restrained; escalates into parody and then into melodrama. Not to be taken too seriously. The climax is suitably apocalyptic. ~Anon
2 stars (Good Try) A remake. ~Tubbs
2 stars (Good Try) Pointless and pretentious, and proof for those who think Tarantino has been a waste of time since Jackie Brown. ~Nick McB
5 stars (Exceptional) ~mvvm
