USA 2003, 89 minutes
Dir. Chad Freidrichs
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary, Music

Aroview: An admirable effort to pin down that most enigmatic of "unknown" musicians, the Texan-based Jandek, whose atonal guitar meanders and even opaquer lyricising are the ultimate challenge for alternative music fans, pushing back the boundaries of what can be called 'music'.

Utterly refusing the usual attentions of journalists, industry types or fans, Jandek finally emerges here in a telephone interview as unwilling to discuss much of importance, but is polite enough. Meanwhile the task of 'explaining' the music is given to a variety of commentators such as Calvin Johnson, Douglas Wolk, Bryan Coley and Richie Unterberger. Shot with a certain morose visual lyricism this documentary finally becomes a spectral journey into the attractions of mysteries.
