Aroview: The 'shadow magic' in question is the early cinema, which is brought to Beijing in 1902 by a travelling promoter (Harris), who, along with a local photographer, tries to convince the locals of its value.
Mostly shot on soundstages, this usefully employs an air of artificiality to reflect its themes, and finally manages to cast a certain spell over its rather slight story.
