Aroview: Mounted on the icy prairies of Montana, this feted ‘indie’ drama sensitively portrays the balance of friendship between a troubled teenager and an equally troubled older man.
Various knockbacks leave Ryan Gosling adrift in his small hometown, where he is recruited by grizzled Samaritan David Morse into a scrub-league of 6-man gridiron. Ambiguities in their relationship become the central issue in this brave study of masculine vulnerability and compassion, which also represents the frontier ‘rules’ of a lonely, almost transient rural community with no less realism and honesty. Although at times unfocused, its visual bravado and a wrenching performances from Morse announce this as an important debut for its (identical twin) directors.
