James Coburn won an Oscar for supporting, but Nick Nolte deserves as much kudos in a (career best) role of rare conviction. Sissy Spacek and Willem Defoe also add layers of complexity and soul to the gripping, dark-hearted journey, taken from a novel by Russell Banks (THE SWEET HEREAFTER).
