Sing Sing
“Greg Kwedar’s sensitive, joyous Sing Sing does more than simply dramatize the workings of the RTA program, it incorporates participants into the very fabric of the film’s DNA.”~Trace Sauveur, Paste Magazine
Aroview: There’s little song but plenty of creative expression in Sing Sing, a unique, sensitive drama set in an actual correctional facility in New York state that bears that unusual name.
Colman Domingo gives a deserved Oscar-nominated performance alongside many real-life ex-prisoners who were once themselves part of the RTA (Rehabilitation Through the Arts) program, including key co-star Clarence Maclin. It’s this basis of reality that gives the film a true grit and power beyond its remit to be inspirational, extending genuine compassion to those then and now at the mercy of a US penal system that is especially punitive towards black men.
