aka: Sidemen: Long Road to Glory
USA 2016, 79 minutes
Dir. Scott D. Rosenbaum
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary, Music / Jazz & Blues

“An exceptionally entertaining and captivating tribute to the men and their music — and that there’s more than enough of said music here to please blues aficionados and recruit converts.”~Joe Leydon, Variety

Aroview: Celebratory tribute to the lives and music of three blues greats: piano player Pinetop Perkins, drummer Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith and guitarist Hubert Sumlin, all of whom played as sidemen for Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.

Full of colourful anecdotes from interviews filmed before all three of them passed away in 2011, the film gives due recognition to the talents of these musicians who, as the title suggests, spent their lives overshadowed and underappreciated. All three had a significant influence on a huge amount of blues and rock stars, including the following artists, whose personal insights are included here: Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman, Derek Trucks, Shemekia Copeland, Robby Krieger, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Perry, Joe Bonamassa and Johnny Winter.
