Lymelife

USA 2008, 95 minutes
Dir. Derick Martini
Rating: [R16]
Genres: Drama / Independent

Topics: Period 1970s.

Synopsis: Two neighbouring families grapple with the outbreak of Lyme disease - and other domestic woes - in this suburban drama set on Long Island in the late 1970's.

Aroview: Indie drama of the downbeat, domestic variety is well-acted and polished, but the "lyme disease" quirk notwithstanding, this otherwise hits the familiar touchstones of the genre - namely teenage alienation and infidelity - without sufficiently deviating or resonating. Rory Culkin ably carries teenage bewilderment, Alec Baldwin adds weight in a smarmy role virtually identical to the one he plays in the popular hit, IT'S COMPLICATED, and the casting of a middle-aged Timothy Hutton directly references the Oscar-winning ORDINARY PEOPLE.
