Aroview: Doctor's wife and mother-of-two Kristin Scott Thomas falls unrelentingly for a blue-collar ex-con in this steamy, captivating French melodrama. But breaking out of her idyllic bourgeois existence is fraught with difficulties and disturbing consequences.

The premise of the woman-who-has-it-all throwing it away in the name of passion follows a traditional strand of French cinema, as too does the character's increasingly irrational behaviour. It's testament to Scott-Thomas's calibre as an actress that fans of her French-speaking cinema will forgive not only the film's flaws, but perhaps her moral treachery as well.
