Une Femme Mariee

aka: A Married Woman: Fragments of a Film Shot in 1964 in Black and White
France 1964, 94 minutes
Dir. Jean-Luc Godard
In French with English subtitles
Rating: [M]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama

Topics: Nouvelle Vague.

Aroview: Key work from the first phase of Godard's career which deconstructs the life of a married woman in a series of complex and humorous portraits. Over a 24 hour period, a woman must decide between two men, her husband or her lover, either of whom could be the father of her unborn child.

This is one of dir. Godard's more conventionally structured works (despite the subtitle), and on the surface suggests a portrait of a liberated woman, although use of advertising imagery and preoccupation with deconstruction of the female body suggests otherwise. Profoundly funny, Godard's otherwise delicate sympathy for his heroine's plight could be interpreted as sardonic.
