USA 2009, 125 minutes
Dir. Tony Gilroy
Genres: Suspense/Crime, Comedy / Romance, Spy
Aroview: Power-dressed by Clive Owen and Julia Roberts, this is a smart, playful conundrum of a spy thriller that proves great fun to unravel, as adversarial corporate raiders Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson try to out-dupe each other out of a highly lucrative trade secret.
Confirming his talent as one of the shrewdest, sharpest talents in Hollywood, writer/director Tony Gilroy (MICHAEL CLAYTON) again fashions an intricate white-collar parable that rewards concentration with a more satisfying pay-off than its convoluted set-up might promise. Innovative use of flashback recalls the work of Christopher Nolan, though his teasingly witty and dense dialogue has a closer kinship to David Mamet and Aaron Sorkin, creator of THE WEST WING.

2 stars (Good Try) ~Sarah
4 stars (Very Good) A detailed and multifaceted spy thriller (part-comedy), with Owen and Roberts continually switching sides on each other, Duplicity will keep you guessing throughout. The dialogue is great, as is the cast's chemistry. ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) My second viewing and although the writer/director has good credentials this just doesn't work as well as it should. Although there is Tom Wilkinson's talent in support the Roberts/Owen lead combo is not strong enough to carry it through ~Tubbs
