USA 2008, 166 minutes
Dir. David Fincher
Rating: [M]
Genres: Drama / Romance, Fantasy

Topics: Tearjerker.

Aroview: The screenwriter of FORREST GUMP expands upon F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story to tell the curious case of a man born on Armistice day as decrepit as an 80-year-old and becoming more youthful as those around him age.

The story is revealed elliptically through Button's diaries, with inevitable loves and losses brought into sharp relief by virtue of his singular transit through life. Narrated by a daughter to her dying mother on the eve of Hurricane Katrina, Button's recollections, like Forrest Gump's, encapsulate various historic landmarks intended to result in a kind of poignant exchange between personal and historical trajectories.

The film is a curious departure for director David Fincher, and deservedly swept up the Oscars for Art Direction, Makeup, and Visual Effects. The attention to period detail is exacting and the CG-and-makeup affected transition from youth to old age, or wizened youth to rejuvenated age as the case may be, is astonishing.
