Perfect Creature
Aroview: Ambitious, well-appointed Gothica set in a retro-alternate Aotearoa, where humans and their highly-evolved vampire colleagues combine forces to capture a murderous rogue who threatens to upset their balance of co-existence.
The eclectic "steam-punk" production design is well realised and served by the location shoots in Dunedin and Oamaru, and visually it competes with many of its Hollywood ilk. Despite being an admirably high-concept twist on the vampire legend, however, its the overkill of expository dialogue and narrative conventionalism that strand it in the dreaded realm of the B-movie.

2 stars (Good Try) Ambitious NZ film with some great atmosphere and effects, and an imaginative alternate steam-punk reality. Visually excellent, but the script, plot, and acting let it down in a big way. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) Unfairly maligned. I liked it a lot when it came out, and viewing again after 20 years I still like it a lot. Some of the acting is the weakest point I admit, but overall it's good dammit! ~glennomeister
