Aroview: Made with the help of newly-available documentation from the former Soviet archives, this impressive biopic about the life and times of Catherine II of Russia ably combines dramatisation with expert interviews.

From her obscure origins as a German princess, through to being handpicked by Empress Catherine I to marry her boorish, impotent son Peter and subsequently plotting various intrigues and coups, she eventually triumphed in leading Russia out of the dark ages. Overall, this provides an excellent summary of her historical importance.
